Doctor Who Spanning Spine

12 Attachment(s)
My Doctor Who Spanning Spine Collection

This collection will be a work in progress for as long as the BBC continues to make Doctor Who. However, since this is a spanning-spine design based on the actors playing the Doctor, I will only add new covers in blocks each time a Doctor leaves the show.

Case sizes:
The first six volumes in this set are for the 39mm 12-disc cases. The rest are for 27mm cases (4-8 discs), except volume 27, which is a 14mm case for the Paul McGann TV Movie.

File Names:
I should have made the .rar file names more useful. Here is a handy color-coded guide so you know which cover you are downloading:

volume_01.rar - volume_26.rar = Season 1 - Season 26

volume_27.rar = TV Movie

volume_28.rar - volume_31.rar = Season 27/Series 1 - Season 30/Series 4

volume_32.rar = Specials

volume_33.rar - volume_41.rar = Season 31/Series 5 - Season 39/Series 13

If you only want the covers for the new series (starting with Christopher Eccelston in 2005), start with Volume 28.

There! All done! (At least until Peter Capaldi stops being the Doctor)

:thu Fantastic work!!! My favorite set of this series on this site! Well Done!!!

rickssg 20-08-2014 20:47

OK, so I don't know how many people are following this thread, but I have been thinking of updates, and I thought I would see what anyone here might think of my ideas.

Many of the images that I used on this set are from this site. Since I made the set, they have updated their image of Paul McGann, taking the new one from the 2013 short (instead of the 1996 TV movie), where he looks older and more girzzled, and less posh. What do you guys think about replacing the spine image that I currently have (where he's holding a pocketwatch) with this one?

Also, there is now an image of the War Doctor. I am toying with the idea of adding him to the spine, perhaps spanning the last cover for Matt Smith and the first cover for Peter Capaldi. That's not where he goes in the regeneration sequence, but it is where he appears in the episode order. Or would it be too spoiler-y to add him at all?

I will also likely update the image of the Ood on the back of Season 28 with this.

Not sure if I'll make any updates either way until Peter Capaldi stops being the Doctor, so that I can add his segment of covers.

Corjan 09-09-2014 18:04

Just wanted to cast my vote on your questions...

I personally like the McGann image with the pocket watch rather than the grizzled image. He appeared posh throughout the movie and I believe should be displayed that way on the spine and cover.

Thumbs up for using the Ood image you recommended.

As to the image of the War Doctor, I believe it should go near your Day and Time of the doctor section (to the right and intersecting Matt and Peter). Perhaps a thought may be to make him transparent compared to the other images, as he was something of a pariah in the story until his change of heart?

This is my favorite spanning set of the Doctor on this site! Well done!

rickssg 22-02-2015 18:31

Thanks for the reply, Corjan. I will be updating the Ood picture soon, but I will wait to add the War Doctor until I have the Capaldi section ready to go (which will not happen until Capaldi retires as the Doctor).

I will also be making some alternative covers starting with Eccelston, with the numbering reset (as the BBC did) so that those who only want to collect the new series can have a set that feels complete rather than part of another set.

eldaris 10-12-2015 03:16

Excellent set. Thanks.

kirbydog01 03-02-2016 15:56

more?

are you going to finish off Matt Smith and do the Peter Capaldi seasons as well, by any chance??

Matt Smith is finished, although I realize that I didn't list Day of the Doctor and Time of the Doctor. My plan is to add those to the beginning of the first Peter Capaldi cover.

Which implies the answer to the other part of your question: yes, I intend to do the Peter Capaldi seasons. In fact, I am already working on them. However, I don't intend to do the spine design until Mr. Capaldi has finished his run as The Doctor. I need to know how many seasons he does so that I can make a nice spine image. I don't want it to look unbalanced like this. Of course, the only way to know for sure how many seasons he does is to wait until he's not doing any more.

So I can't even release covers for the existing seasons of Peter Capaldi, because they would have no spine images.

But don't worry; I fully intend to continue this project as long as the BBC continues Doctor Who. Shortly after each regeneration, I will release a batch of covers for the doctor that just left the show.

MrHenryDog 17-02-2016 20:11

Good to hear Rick

rickssg 24-05-2016 07:51

I have updated Volumes 6, 10, and 11 with better images on the front.

rickssg 29-08-2016 17:36

For those who are watching this thread and eagerly anticipating the Capaldi updates (that list includes at least me, and perhaps other people), you may find it interesting (or frustrating) to know that I have completed the first two Capaldi covers except for the spine. And I have come up with a basic spine design that assumes three Capaldi seasons, which I can modify if necessary to cover more seasons. What all this means is that there should not be very much lag time at all between the official announcement of Capaldi's departure from the show (whenever that happens to be) and my release of the covers for his seasons.

fsurfer 29-08-2016 18:41

What an amazing set of covers

kirbydog01 02-12-2016 21:03

As I have said in previous posts, I absolutely will add all of the seasons for Peter Capaldi almost immediately after Capaldi resigns as the Doctor. I can't do it before then, because this is a spanning spine set, and I can't make the Capaldi section of the spines before I know how many spines that will be.

Remember when Paramount released a VHS boxed set of the first five Star Trek movies with a really cool Enterprise image spanning the spines of the VHS boxes, and then they made Star Trek VI, and just kind of tacked in on the end, like in this image, and now it looks really stupid and unbalanced? I'm not going to do that. The only way to know for sure how many spines to use for the Capaldi section is to not do them until Capaldi has been replaced. I have already done the fronts and backs of his first two seasons, so the complete set will be ready to go very soon after a new Doctor is announced.

Trust me, I want the set to be current just as much as anyone!

rickssg 03-02-2017 03:15

I didn't see the news until today, but Peter Capaldi has announced that he will no longer be the Doctor after the current season. Look for updates to this set coming very soon.

rickssg 09-02-2017 06:16

And there we have it. Peter Capaldi's first and second seasons as The Doctor. The final Capaldi cover will be added once that season has aired.

I open them in Photoshop and then save them as PDF. Then I use Adobe Acrobat reader to print them. All of these covers except the Paul McGann one (which is volume 27) will need to be printed on legal (US) sized paper (11" x 14"). Make sure that in the pdf print options, scaling is set to "none" (acrobat by default will scale the image to fit the paper, and then it will be too big to fit in the case). If you are printing at home on an inkjet printer, use the highest-quality glossy paper that is available for your printer (although finding it in legal size will be a challenge).

I prefer to take it to an office supply store and have them print it on their giant, expensive laser printers on plain legal paper. They come out amazing. If you have access to a relatively new color laser printer other than at an office supply store, that works too, of course.

You're welcome! It was a lot of work, but it was fun!

rickssg 08-05-2017 06:19

Updated to now include Peter Capaldi's final season.

In the past, the BBC has created a new Doctor Who logo roughly with each new Doctor. This fact has played heavily into the spine design for this set. The fact that the BBC did not change the logo significantly between Matt Smith and Peter Capaldi led me to use a fan-created logo that is different enough from Smith's and close enough to Capaldi's that it works for the set. Now that we have a new Doctor and new creative team after this year, I would be incredibly happy if they also come up with a new logo. I don't think they realize the problems they cause for me when they break their patterns!

rickssg 15-10-2017 17:36

Well, here is some news that will impact this cover set. The background is that in 1980, the BBC never finished filming the final story of season 17 due to labor strikes. Because of this, that story is not included in the listings in the back of this cover set. The news is that the BBC has announced that they will be completing this episode with animation, voiced by the original actors. It will be a simple thing to add one story title to the back of one cover. Less simple is the fact that I have numbered the stories, and now all of the numbering after this story will be off by one. *sigh*

fsurfer 15-10-2017 20:01

We are talking about Shada so you could add as an extra to the cover as it was never aired

It is not included in the episode or story counts as it was not broadcast

Good point! Thanks for the idea; that's probably what I'll do!

fsurfer 16-10-2017 20:39

Appears it will be released as a digital download on 24 November 2017, and on DVD / Blu-Ray on 4 December 2017. The animated sequences were by the same team that undertook the animated version of the 1966 serial The Power of the Daleks.

So wait and see.

this is by far the best set ive ever seen, i have one question and i know its a huge one, but is it possible to make the set in standard sizes for at least the sets that dont have more than 6 discs?

Thanks for the compliment! I'm glad you like the set.

I actually considered doing what you are asking way back when I started this set. But to me, spanning-spine designs look weird if they are made of varying case widths, so there is already more variation in this set than I would have preferred. That's why I went with the current case sizes, even though in a couple of instances you will only have four discs in a 1"-wide case.

rickssg 23-02-2018 18:30

I am excited that the BBC has announced a new logo for Doctor Who! The first reason is that the new logo is pretty cool. The second reason is that I really needed them to make a new logo for the new doctor so that this cover set can have some design consistency.

It is an improvement

harri169 21-03-2018 16:08

Thanks for these Covers

rickssg 04-01-2019 02:11

So the latest season of Doctor Who (11) has been announced for release at the end of January (at least in the US). There will be three (3) discs in the season set. That's right, I have been designing one-inch-thick cases for each season, and they give me 3 measly discs? Oh, well, I guess I can include the Christmas Special, and if there is a two-disc special edition, it will be up to 4 discs. That will make me feel better.

fsurfer 04-01-2019 11:54

Not impressed by the new Dalek, think Blue Peter could have designed a better version

bulletdodger 30-08-2020 14:57

I won't be downloading this, but hats off for the AMAZING work.

rickssg 02-10-2020 20:39

Thanks, bulletdodger!

I'm in love with the Blond doctor :ha

Niceeeeeeeee :thu

Just found this awesome set! Any recommendations on matching or as complete season wise disc labels, as this cover set is?

rickssg 03-08-2021 19:01

Posted the first two of Whittaker's covers. Her last cover will be out after all the episode titles have been released.

Any speculation / dream casting for the next doctor?
