Odds are MrCracker that you did not stroke the path or the settings for your brush was not set to "BLACK" 4px at 90% hardness. Go back to your created path and select it then click the stoke path button.

I think i may have missed out the stroke path bit will give it another go and see if i have any luck this time

I too like sauron was having difficulties with this but have just finally managed to do it right - some problems with the stroke path for some reason. Got a really good result and many thanks for the tutorial.
