Idris Elba, when asked about whether a third series is likely, said, "We'll have to see what the appetite is like for it at the end of this series. If it's a good, healthy appetite then we'll figure out how we're going to do some more." BBC One controller announced in August 2011 that a third series had been commissioned. It is expected that the lead cast from the second series will return to make four hour-long episodes and this will air in either late 2012 or early 2013.

Season three of "Luther," the British crime drama starring Idris Elba in his best post-Stringer Bell role as the brilliant, obsessive Detective Chief Inspector John Luther, won't air in the U.S. until September 3 on BBC America. The U.K. will see the four new episodes sooner -- the BBC will be premiering them in July, and has just released a trailer showcasing Elba back in his Golden Globe-winning role, as well as Sienna Guillory as a new love interest and Ruth Wilson returning as Luther's sociopathic pal Alice.
